Fridtjof Nansen and five other men battled their way over the Greenland Ice Sheet in 1888, traversing the island on cross-country skis. They became the first men in history to complete the crossing. Nearly 130 years later the expedition is more popular than ever. Women and men spend a significant amount of money to basically ski, eat and sleep, day in and day out for a month.

An expedition like this is like a bubble, a different universe. In this bubble it is hard to care about anything else than the basic needs. That is the beauty of it. Eat enough, sleep enough, keep warm, keep dry. You are constantly exposed to whatever the weather gods throw at you, and it affects you in every way.

Every single day I made a portrait of all the members of the expedition. These photos are some of them.
